Kennesaw is in Cobb County, GA. Population was 21,675 in 2000. Census of 2005 indicate a pop of 30,522. Originalyl named "Big Shanty" it is now considered a suburb of Atlanta.

During American Civil War, "Big Shanty" is where the major fighting in the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain, part of the larger Atlanta Campaign. Kennesaw Mountain now contains many historic areas, all though much of this land is developed, and some buried artifacts stolen by people with metal detectors. Kennesaw Mountain is included in the park, its summit is the highest point in Atlanta area, elevation of 1808 feet above sea level. The city was renamed for the mountain. Area around Kennesaw, a major retail hub with a major regional mall, Town Center at Cobb, numerous restaurants and most major chain stores along Barrett Parkway south east of city.
