The Nashville-Davidson–Murfreesboro–Franklin, TN metropolitan statistical area in Middle Tennessee is the 39th largest Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) in the United States and the largest metropolitan area in the state of Tennessee.

It was originally designated by the United States Census Bureau in 1950, when it consisted only of Davidson County. As surrounding counties increased in population densities and in the number of their residents employed within Davidson County, they met Census criteria to be added to the MSA. Davidson County is now joined with twelve other counties to form this MSA.

The Nashville-Davidson–Murfreesboro–Columbia, TN Combined Statistical Area (CSA) is the result of the addition of the Micropolitan Statistical Area of Columbia, TN (Maury County, Tennessee) to the Nashville-Davidson–Murfreesboro–Franklin, TN Metropolitan Statistical Area. The estimated population of the CSA as of July 1, 2007, was 1,521,437. This metropolitan statistical area includes some of Tennessee's fastest growing counties.
